I am a fourth year tourism student, who is currently graduating. During my last minor, Destination Development, I was commissioned by Amsterdam Marketing to create a tourism product in order to spread tourism to the 11 surrounding neighborhoods of Amsterdam. Together with my project group we worked on the neighborhood of Amsterdam Noord. We created the hypothetical company of IJamaze. While conducting my thesis research I will get to further develop IJamaze.

While conducting my thesis research I will get to further develop IJamaze.

This is a research in which I will get to develop a project I really enjoyed working on in period 4.1. The IJamaze product is a tourism product which brings the locals of Amsterdam Noord and tourists, who are visiting Amsterdam, together by letting them do an activity together. Since the product does include a surprise element, the tourist who books the IJamaze product does not know exactly what they are going to do beforehand. However, they are able to choose one of the four themes, depending on their own field of interest. After choosing one of the themes, the match is made with a local who is able to offer an activity related to the theme. On the day of the activity itself, the tourist will be informed on what he/she needs to bring and some ‘icebreakers’ will be provided to help the conversation flow.

Now my objective is: ‘’To gain insight into the characteristics of a product plan for IJamaze, including a tourism product per theme which are in line with the wishes and needs pf different stakeholders, in order to create a product and implementation plan’’. 

 By following this objective four sustainable tourism products will be co-created with the locals, creating a platform for a meaningful encounter between tourists and locals. Showing the tourists the authentic Noord and including the locals by giving them ownership of the product.
